What's the Difference Between Marijuana and Hemp Oil?

Marijuana and hemp oil are opposite sides of the same coin in many ways. They share similar traits, but their makeup in regard to THC and CBD differentiate them. Here's a brief rundown on the differences between marijuana and hemp oil.

THC Content

To THC or not to THC? If you’re interested in getting high, you'll prefer marijuana because of the THC concentration of between 15-40 percent. Your ability to obtain the drug will be limited because not many places have legalized recreational marijuana. If you want to take advantage of the health benefits associated with the CBD found in abundance in hemp, you will be relieved to learn CBD oil is legal in all 50 states because it only has trace amounts of THC.

Same Family, Different Plant

While marijuana has high concentrations of the psychoactive compound THC, hemp's active ingredient is CBD. The genus of cannabis includes three species of the cannabis plant, including the most common, cannabis sativa, cannabis indica, and cannabis ruderalis. The different types have varying quantities of THC and CBD. The cannabinoids of interest are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC – psychoactive) and cannabidiol (CBD – non-psychoactive). This is why hemp is cultivated for industrial use, while marijuana is cultivated for its medicinal value and recreational potential as a psychoactive drug.

Properties and Uses

Hemp is an amazingly versatile plant. It’s a useful ingredient in items from skin care products to paper, fabric, and rope. It can be used as part of a biofuel or to create a resilient alternative to plastic. It’s particularly useful as a building material because it’s naturally waterproof, fireproof, and pest-resistant.

CBD is a powerful healing agent, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory. It reduces nausea and vomiting and helps to alleviate seizures. It combats pain and reduces anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and insomnia. It provides relief from arthritis as well as alleviating the symptoms of Alzheimer’s, autism, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, lupus, fibromyalgia, inflammatory bowel syndrome, and Crohn’s disease.

Why should fitness enthusiasts care? Because CBD treats the aches and pains associated with being athletic, it’s useful in reducing those symptoms without the complications of drugs.

The user’s intent will determine which strain of cannabis they will need. They run the gambit from marijuana designed for use as a recreational drug to CBD with nothing more than a trace of THC designated for industrial use and its potential health benefits.

Although you can’t diffuse CBD oil without changing it or buying diffuser oil with CBD in it, you can gain some of the aromatherapy benefits from using diffusers with other oils. Check out the rest of our shop for oils, water bottles, and more!
