Six Infusion Recipes for More Flavorful Water

Humans need sufficient hydration to keep our bodies functioning properly. Drinking plenty of water can also help you to feel full and increase metabolism, which can aid in weight loss. However, many people don't drink enough water because they don't like the taste. If that describes you, it's time to try infusions - which add flavor and nutrients, but very few calories, and encourage you to drink enough water throughout the day!

 

What is an Infusion?

Flavorful ingredients (like fruits, herbs, edible flowers, and essential oils) added to water and allowed to slowly release their flavor will create an infusion. The longer you let the ingredients sit, the more intense the flavor will be. You don't need any special equipment to make infusions at home, but there are fairly inexpensive infusion pitchers and water bottles on the market that make the process even easier.

 

How to Make an Infusion

Choose organic fruits if possible, or thoroughly wash non-organic fruit to remove any pesticides. Use a glass container with a lid, fill with cold water, and add your ingredients. Hard fruits such as apples should be sliced thinly. Herbs should be crushed to release the flavor before adding to water, and smaller flowers and loose herbs (such as lavender) can be gathered into cheesecloth to keep the small bits contained. Essential oils provide an added kick of flavor, and a little goes a long way, but they tend to separate - so shake before drinking. Some ingredients will begin to flavor the water almost immediately, and some need more time to do the trick. Allow ingredients at least a couple of hours to work their magic and refrigerate while you wait.

 

Melon-Berry Mint

4 cups watermelon, cubed

1/2 pint sliced strawberries

6 sprigs mint, lightly crushed

 

Cucumber Mint

1 lime, thinly sliced

5-inch cucumber, sliced thinly

5 mint leaves

1 drop peppermint essential oil

 

Lemon Ginger

Juice of 2 lemons

2-inch section ginger root, thinly sliced

 

Rosemary Lemonade

1 sprig rosemary

1 lemon, sliced

1 drop each lemon & rosemary essential oil

 

Tropical Delight

1/3 cup cubed pineapple

1 mandarin orange

Splash of coconut water

2 drops orange essential oil

 

Autumn Joy

1 cinnamon stick

1 sliced apple

1 drop cinnamon essential oil

 

These recipes will get you started, but experiment with different combinations of your favorite fruits and herbs - it's hard to do this wrong!
